This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at 8pm on the 29 March, 2008 millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane, Tel Aviv and Manila will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.

Green IT Best Practices

CDN Technologies always implements best practices in IT solutions, to utilize computer resources efficiently. There are many different things you can do on a daily basis at your office to reduce the world’s consumption and reliance on energy. Simple things such as using your server for faxes and an inter office web page for news and current events. Organizing your office by using a server and going paperless is easier than you think.

Turning off lunch room appliances not in use and working in natural light is ideal. You will be energy efficient, save money and get your daily does of vitamin D. Not having to remember to turn out the lights when you leave is one less thing on your to do list.

If your office is not paperless yet, print double-sided and always use recycled paper. Add a disclosure to your emails: Please don't print this e-mail unless you really need to. You can talk with your office manager about turning off any equipment at work that is not being used. This includes computer screens, copiers, and printers particularly when you leave at night. If you are using HP products in your office, you are on the leading edge because HP just moved up a few ranks in the ‘Green IT’ world and has been acknowledged for implementing wonderful energy efficient practices in the production of their PC’s and in amount of energy that PC’s use.

Make sure to turn off lights at the end of the working day. Unplug your mobile phone charger when it’s not in use. Look for ways to help your company to reduce energy use in your workplace. If your employer knows you care about making your workplace environmentally friendly, most likely they will be more inclined to feel that you care about your work and have initiative to make things better.
