Do You Trust
Your IT Company?
Who would you trust with your company’s:
- Financial information
- Inventory
- Logistic control
- Email
- Client’s information
- Banking information
- Secret recipes
- Patent information
- Historical data
- Sales and marketing materials
- Business plans
- Budgets
- Yesterday’s work
Your IT person’s job is to maintain and secure all of your
private company information and be calm in a crisis. You need to
be confident that your IT person does not break, lose or steal your
information. Your IT person needs to be able to speak ‘business’
as opposed to ‘geek’ speak so that technical issues
can be addressed from a business perspective. So how do you know
your IT company can be trusted?
Ask for Current Client References before Employing an IT Company
Like all other employees and subcontractors, the IT company you
employ should come with good references. Ask them to give you the
names and contact details of companies that are of a similar size
to yours that they are currently working with and who you can contact
for reference purposes. Phone each of these references and ask them
about how they perceive the IT company that you are considering
working with. Ask if their computer operations are efficient. Is
the computer company worth the monies they are being paid? Ask how
long they have been working with the IT company. Ask about their
invoicing terms, and how responsive they are to call backs.
Consider Past Experience
What projects has this IT company worked on before? How long has
the IT company been in existence? Always consider past experience
when choosing a trustworthy IT provider. If someone has plenty of
experience dealing with companies’ IT problems then they will
be more adept at handling any technology situations that you may
have in your company. Small, medium and large sized businesses all
have their IT issues and you want to be sure that your IT company
is experienced, prepared and trained to deliver solutions for your
IT problems that generates rapid, meaningful and measurable results.
How Contactable Are They?
Is there an actual office or is it a one-man show that is doing
it on the side of his regular career? This is especially relevant
if you are employing an IT company to assist with your computer
networks and systems. You want to be sure that your IT issues are
addressed immediately during business hours. If you have problems
getting hold of a company, or you find them online and they do not
give contact details, then it is difficult to trust them. If you
find it easy to contact the company then you should feel more comfortable
dealing with them as you know you can get hold of them should you
have any problems.
Ask Questions
If you are working with an IT company to provide your computer
service, you should ask lots of questions and see how well they
are answered. What chain of command is there in the company and
how soon will your queries be dealt with? What services do they
provide? Will you be working with one particular person, a group
or different people depending on the problem? If you are employing
an IT person to work within your company, you will also want to
ask them some questions in their interview.
Being able to trust your IT company is important. You should ask
lots of questions; consider their credentials and references, as
well as their past experience. You also need to consider how contactable
they are, and whether you can easily get hold of the person who
will be able to assist you.
