Time to sort yourself out – How to organize your digital world

Organize yourselfIs paperwork getting the better of you? Does your desk or desktop always feel like complete chaos? Can you be better organized?

Alarming statistics show that if we waste just 30 minues a day looking for files, receipts, and paperwork on our desks and desktops, it accumulates to three wasted weeks a year.

Here are some tips to help you transform your office into an organized haven so you can increase your efficiency, save time and decrease stress levels.

1. Label, label, label. Chances are that within a day of storing an item in a folder or file you've forgotten exactly what or where you just stored or filed. Just as you would clearly label boxes and containers, clearly label folders and files so items can be found quickly and easily.

2. Treat junk mail like an intruder. If at all possible, do not even let junk email into your email. Create a rule, or black list the domain in your spam filter to prevent unwanted emails from distracting you.

3. Organize your digital world. In this age of computers and the internet be sure to make both software and hardware work to your best advantage.  Organize all of your files logically and ensure that they are clearly labelled.  Pluck through old computer files regularly, just as you would paper files.

4. Work efficiently. Ensure you have a great desk chair, that your desk is at the right height, that you lighting is adequate and that you have a pen and notebook next to the phone. Or have your notepad open on desktop.

5.  Finally wherever possible, use the internet to conduct business. Pay bills and so on - it cuts down on the amount of paperwork your everyday administraive tasks produce.
